QuickChek™ ADV Aleutian Disease Virus (ADV) Antibody Test
For the rapid detection of ADV antibodies in Ferret Oral Fluid (Saliva)

I. Introduction

Aleutian Disease Virus (ADV) is a persistent, highly contagious parvovirus that affects ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) and is characterized by the formation of non-neutralizing antibodies, general plasmacytosis as well as gross physical and other histopathological symptoms and signs. Age and stress can exacerbate symptoms and may cause expression of the virus. ADV is spread via casual contact and is present in the blood, saliva, feces and urine of infected ferrets. ADV Antibody can be detected approximately 2 weeks after infection. Ferrets found to be positive for ADV Antibody should be isolated as suspected carriers of the disease.

II. Principle of the Test

An oral fluid (saliva) sample is added to an absorbent pad in the bottom of the QuickChek™ ADV device and migrates by capillary action onto a sample pad contained within the device. Any ADV antibodies present in the sample will bind to a specific ADV-related protein coated onto a "carrier" material (red colored) contained within the sample pad to form the conjugate. The TEST area (designated by a T on the edge of the plastic device) contains a second binding protein that will immobilize any ADV Antibody-conjugate as it moves through the device. A red line in this region signifies a POSITIVE test. A red line in the CONTROL area (designated by a C) signifies the test is functioning properly. A red line in the control (C) area but no color in the test (T) area signifies a NEGATIVE test for ADV Antibody.

QuickChek™ ADV is similar to the ADV Antibody ELISA test but is formatted as a point-of-care test (POCT) for ease of use in veterinary clinics and hospitals, at shelters and at home.

III. Contents of the QuickChek™ Test Kit

(1) QuickChek™ ADV test
(1) Oral Fluid (Saliva) Collection Swab
(1) Plastic Tube with Collection Fluid
(1) Applicator Pipet

IV. Storage and Stability

Store the QuickChek™ ADV test at room temperature (15-30° C). Do not freeze. QuickChek™ ADV is stable until the expiration date.

V. Specimen Collection and Testing Procedure (Refer to pictures.)

Open the foil wrapper containing the QuickChek™ ADV test and place it on a flat surface. Using the Oral Fluid Collection Swab, gently but firmly rub the mouth, tongue and gum areas of the Ferret's oral cavity for approximately one minute. Be sure to collect fluid from the sublingual (under the tongue) area of the Ferret's mouth and the area where the teeth extrude from the gums. Open the cap of the Plastic Tube with Collection Fluid, and place the swab in the fluid. VIGOROUSLY swirl the swab in the tube for approximately 3 minutes, then discard the swab. Re-cap the tube and invert 5-10 times. Using the Applicator Pipet, add approximately 4-5 drops to the bottom of the QuickChek™ ADV test ALL AT ONE TIME, or until the round depression in the plastic at the sample addition area is filled. Read the results between 10 and 30 minutes after sample addition, then discard device.

NOTE: DO NOT FEED FERRET FOR 1 HOUR BEFORE TESTING (INCLUDING FERRETONE) - FOOD PARTICLES MAY INTERFERE WITH PROPER SPECIMEN COLLECTION AND TEST PERFORMANCE (water OK).
