I. Introduction
Aleutian Disease Virus (ADV) is a persistent, highly contagious
parvovirus that affects ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) and
is characterized by the formation of non-neutralizing antibodies,
general plasmacytosis as well as gross physical and other
histopathological symptoms and signs. Age and stress can exacerbate
symptoms and may cause expression of the virus. ADV is spread
via casual contact and is present in the blood, saliva, feces
and urine of infected ferrets. ADV Antibody can be detected
approximately 2 weeks after infection. Ferrets found to be
positive for ADV Antibody should be isolated as suspected
carriers of the disease.
II. Principle of the Test
An oral fluid (saliva) sample is added to an absorbent pad
in the bottom of the QuickChek ADV device and migrates
by capillary action onto a sample pad contained within the
device. Any ADV antibodies present in the sample will bind
to a specific ADV-related protein coated onto a "carrier"
material (red colored) contained within the sample pad to
form the conjugate. The TEST area (designated by a T on the
edge of the plastic device) contains a second binding protein
that will immobilize any ADV Antibody-conjugate as it moves
through the device. A red line in this region signifies a
POSITIVE test. A red line in the CONTROL area (designated
by a C) signifies the test is functioning properly. A red
line in the control (C) area but no color in the test (T)
area signifies a NEGATIVE test for ADV Antibody.
QuickChek ADV is similar to the ADV Antibody ELISA
test but is formatted as a point-of-care test (POCT) for ease
of use in veterinary clinics and hospitals, at shelters and
at home.
